Why Upgrade from Default Bash to Zsh?
Bash is the universal default across Unix environments, but Zsh offers significant productivity enhancements: path autocompletion, customizable prompt themes, spell correction, and an active plugin ecosystem. Pairing Zsh with Oh My Zsh and Powerlevel10k creates a responsive terminal prompt that displays Git branch status, execution times, and Node/Python versions in real time.
1. Installing Zsh and Oh My Zsh
# Install Zsh (Ubuntu / Debian / WSL2)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y zsh git fonts-firacode
# Install Oh My Zsh framework
sh -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ohmyzsh/ohmyzsh/master/tools/install.sh)"
2. Installing the Powerlevel10k Theme
git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/romkatv/powerlevel10k.git ${ZSH_CUSTOM:-$HOME/.oh-my-zsh/custom}/themes/powerlevel10k
Edit your ~/.zshrc file and update the theme name:
ZSH_THEME="powerlevel10k/powerlevel10k"
Restart your shell or run p10k configure to launch the interactive prompt styling wizard.
3. Adding Essential Productivity Plugins
# zsh-autosuggestions (suggests previous commands as you type)
git clone https://github.com/zsh-users/zsh-autosuggestions ${ZSH_CUSTOM:-~/.oh-my-zsh/custom}/plugins/zsh-autosuggestions
# zsh-syntax-highlighting (highlights valid commands in green, typos in red)
git clone https://github.com/zsh-users/zsh-syntax-highlighting.git ${ZSH_CUSTOM:-~/.oh-my-zsh/custom}/plugins/zsh-syntax-highlighting
Enable plugins in ~/.zshrc:
plugins=(git zsh-autosuggestions zsh-syntax-highlighting docker composer)
Save and reload with source ~/.zshrc. Your terminal is now fully optimized with syntax highlighting and smart command history autocompletion.
